Naftali Aklum introduced the community to Sigd, the Ethiopian Jewish holiday marked on the 29th of Cheshvan and an Israeli state holiday since 2008.
Speaker
Naftali Aklum
Ethiopian-Israeli educator
Sigd falls on the 29th of Cheshvan, fifty days after Yom Kippur. Israel has recognized it as a state holiday since 2008, and in Israel it now runs for the month leading up to the date.
Naftali Aklum explained what Beta Israel actually does on Sigd and why the holiday’s recognition mattered — for Ethiopian Israelis, and for every other Israeli learning it. Thirteen organizations helped promote the evening.
