After October 7

Missions and relief

AIC has sent five direct-aid delegations to Israel since October 7. They pack the suitcases themselves, and what they photograph on the ground is the work rather than the trip — the vehicle graveyard, the anemones at the Nova site, a grill going for a community that had not eaten together in months.

  • Donated toys, toiletries and household goods spread across a floor, sorted into piles for packing.
  • A volunteer bending over a suitcase, packing donated goods laid out across the floor around her.
  • Bundles of relief supplies wrapped in plastic and stacked, ready to travel.
  • Two volunteers working over a low table covered in donated goods, sorting them into cases.
  • Wrapped bedding and soft goods stacked on a bench, packed for delivery.
  • A corner of a room filled with donated toys and supplies piled against the wall.
  • Boxed children's toys and games stacked on a table, part of a relief shipment.
  • Suitcases stacked and strapped together, loaded for a delegation carrying relief supplies to Israel.
  • A memorial of red anemones laid out across open ground at the Nova festival site.
  • A framed photograph of one of the murdered set among the memorial markers at the Nova festival site.
  • Rows of burnt-out vehicles behind wire, collected from the communities attacked on 7 October.
  • Wrecked and rusted cars stacked in the open air at the vehicle graveyard.
  • A close view of the twisted, burnt remains of cars behind the perimeter fence.
  • A large yellow ribbon sculpture standing alone on open ground under a grey sky, marking the hostages.
  • Tall pillars of light rising in the dark at a memorial site.
  • A volunteer in a blue shirt and gloves scrubbing pans at an outdoor sink.
  • Two volunteers working side by side at a sink, cleaning cooking equipment.
  • Trays of salads and prepared food laid along a table, ready to serve.
  • Serving dishes set out on a table under a marquee, with people gathering to eat.
  • A crowd of volunteers serving themselves from platters of food under a large tent.
  • A long charcoal grill set up on grass, loaded with meat and smoking hard.
  • Skewers cooking over an open charcoal grill outdoors.
  • Smoke pouring from a full grill in a garden as the meat cooks.
  • A grill smoking on a lawn with the cooking crew working around it.
  • Volunteers in blue shirts working the ground on a green hillside in low afternoon light.
  • Two volunteers walking through an olive grove in bright sun.
  • One volunteer passing something to another between the olive trees, hands meeting mid-frame.
  • Volunteers standing and talking among the trees on a working morning.
  • A volunteer standing with a rescued horse on a scrubby hillside.
  • Israeli flags tied among the branches of an old olive grove, a memorial in the trees.
  • A path through the flagged olive grove, visitors walking between the trees.
  • A volunteer in an AIC shirt standing at a railing, looking out over a wide green valley.
  • A broad valley of terraced fields and orchards under a clouded sky.
  • A small group standing on a ridge above the fields, taking in the view.
  • Rolling hills and cultivated orchards stretching to the horizon.
  • A low stone structure standing in an overgrown field.
  • Bottles of local wine and olive oil ranged along a shop counter.
  • The I-heart-JLM letters standing in the open at dusk, the Old City walls behind.
  • The I-heart-JLM sculpture at last light, with people climbing on the letters.

November 2022

The 2022 Israel Mission

AIC spent two pandemic years touring Israel by video. In November 2022 it went in person — ten days from Jerusalem to the Golan, led by Cheryl Dorchinsky with guide David Sussman. These are the delegation's own photographs.

  • Rooftops of Jerusalem's Old City under a clear sky, an Israeli flag flying among the water tanks and aerials.
  • A framed print in an Old City shop showing four hasidic men crossing a street in the pose of the Abbey Road cover.
  • The white dome of the Hurva Synagogue above the open plaza of the Jewish Quarter, cafe umbrellas below.
  • A man in a white robe walking away down a stone lane in the Old City, past an empty bench.
  • A woman in a red coat with both hands and her forehead pressed against the stones of the Western Wall.
  • The Western Wall plaza in the afternoon, white chairs scattered across the stone and worshippers gathered at the wall.
  • An eternal flame burning in a pierced metal vessel beside a menorah, against an ancient stone wall.
  • A priest in white vestments standing in a stone doorway inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
  • A hand-lettered Holy Sepulchre sign above a stone archway, visitors filing in beneath it.
  • Jaffa Gate's stone archway and crenellated tower against a deep blue sky.
  • A bilingual sign at a holy site asking visitors to respect the holiness of the place with appropriate attire and decorum.
  • A large black-and-white mural of a cat's face painted on an Old City wall, a parked car beneath it.
  • A man wrapped in a tallit, wearing tefillin, with his hand resting on the stones of the Western Wall.
  • The Old City skyline with the golden Dome of the Rock rising behind the rooftops.
  • Israeli flags strung on a line across a narrow stone alley in the Old City.
