Meet Indigenous New Zealander Zionists

Alfred Ngaro, a Cook Islander and former New Zealand MP, and Māori historian Dr. Sheree Trotter of the Indigenous Coalition for Israel, on Jewish indigeneity. A CAEF and CIJR webinar that AIC co-sponsored.

    He served in New Zealand's Parliament from 2011 to 2020, including as a Cabinet minister, and as an MP he re-established Parliament's Friends of Israel group.

  • Sheree Trotter

    Co-director, Indigenous Coalition for Israel; Māori historian

    Of Te Arawa, with a PhD in history from the University of Auckland. In 2012 she co-founded the Holocaust and Antisemitism Foundation, for which she has interviewed Holocaust survivors.

The Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation and the Canadian Institute for Jewish Research put this webinar together, and AIC was one of more than twenty co-sponsors. It was called Understanding Jewish Indigeneity: Indigenous New Zealanders Speak, and on the Atlanta Jewish Connector AIC billed it the plain way: meet Indigenous New Zealander Zionists.

The two guests ran the Indigenous Coalition for Israel together. Hon. Alfred Ngaro was the first Cook Islander ever elected to New Zealand’s Parliament, and he served there for nine years. Dr. Sheree Trotter is Māori, and she wrote her history doctorate on Zionism. They came to talk about the Jewish people as an indigenous people, the way indigenous people on the far side of the Pacific see it.

It ran on Zoom at 3 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, January 13, 2022, which was already ten the next morning in New Zealand.

Two years later the pair opened the Indigenous Embassy Jerusalem.
